What is the recommended cycle of carpet cleaning for a family’s home?

July 26, 2011

Carpet manufacturers recommend that the carpet be professionally cleaned every 12-18 months. However, if pets or children are present then it is recommended that they be cleaned more often and twice as much if you smoke in your home. Meet Rami Mawlawi – Premium Carpet & Upholstery PRO and Owner

What got you into the carpet cleaning business?

I worked as an engineer for an area rug company in Lebanon, which got me into the technical side of floor coverings. Then while I was attending CU in Denver, I worked for a carpet cleaning company, and enjoyed that work. When I moved to Fort Collins to attend CSU for Mechanical Engineering, I began helping a friend of mine with his carpet and air duct cleaning business. It was great for me, going to school and doing the business. That led me to go into business for myself

What kind of training do you and your employees go through?

I am certified and received training by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). The IICRC was formed in 1972 as a nonprofit certification entity. They promote an international standard of care in home and business environments that maintains safety, health, and welfare through industry training.

Our firm is certified with the IICRC, and we attend industry seminars to keep up with trends and technological advances to ensure our work is the best it can be.

What’s the hardest carpet cleaning situation you’ve ever handled?

I’ll share two stories with you.

We had some clients with an extremely dirty carpet. They were so skeptical that the carpet would come clean that they had three cameras rolling while we worked. Through the cleaning, the carpet literally changed color, all the way back to it’s original state. The fun part about this one was our clients’ complete disbelief. It’s great to see that kind of satisfaction.

Another client came home to her clean carpet and told me she was in awe, and that was     the carpet she bought! She was amazed at the dramatic difference the cleaning had made. Her realtor actually thought she had bought new carpet.

I suppose the moral of both these stories is that if you maintain your carpet throughout its life cycle, instead of waiting until it’s almost destroyed, you’ll get to enjoy it all the time.

Although we clean carpet so that it will look good, our ultimate goal is for a healthy carpet.

What kinds of cleaning products do you prefer, and why?

I prefer safe green solutions. Sometimes we have to use more aggressive products to clean tough stains, and we’ll use products that are proven to be strong enough to get the job done. But if you maintain your carpet well, have it cleaned regularly and deal with spills promptly, it will be much easier to use safe green products. In the long run you and your carpet will be healthier and happier.

What kind of carpet is the most resilient and why?

100% nylon is probably the most resilient, followed by olefin. They are forgiving fibers, easier to clean and longer lasting. Wool is beautiful but not practical in general. You can’t make a mistake with wool, and stains are really tough to get out. Stick with nylon or olefin.

How does Premium Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning figure pricing?

We follow the industry standard of charging by the square foot. We use the Blue Book International Residential and Light Commercial Cost Guide. Customers know what to expect, and we know we’re charging the right price for our work.

How long have you lived in Fort Collins, and what are the biggest changes you have seen?

We’ve been here 21 years now, ever since we moved from Denver so I could attend Colorado State University. Fort Collins has more than doubled in size in the last two decades. A lot of other carpet cleaning companies have started. People seem to think that if they’ve got a van and a machine, they can be in the business. I’ve even seen this in the restoration category. When we moved here, there were only 3 or 4 companies, and now there are many more than that.

We’ve also noticed that customers are becoming more educated on how to clean their carpets. They seem more aware of the importance of keeping their families healthy by maintaining their carpets. Customers are more knowledgeable about the environment and are increasingly committed to healthier lifestyles. The internet has allowed anyone to learn practically anything!

The importance of repairing carpet – Premium Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

July 11, 2011

Sometimes damaged carpet can be repaired instead of replaced. If your carpet has normal wear and tear, stains, or has become flattened or warped, it doesn’t automatically mean it needs to be replaced.

A damaged carpet won’t heal on its own. It will continue to get worse as time goes on, so it’s a good idea to have your damaged carpet repaired sooner than later. Repairing carpet rather than replacing it is easier on the wallet and on the environment.

Start with a consultation with a certified professional. A thorough cleaning of soiled or flattened carpet may rejuvenate it so much that it looks brand new again.

Premium Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning also offers re-stretching services. This process involves removing and reinstalling carpet so that it is properly stretched again. That and a good professional cleaning may do the trick.

Keep Your Carpet Looking New

July 11, 2011

Carpet is a big investment. It’s important to keep that investment in good shape for as long as possible. Summertime means kids are home more, often coming in and out of the house many times daily, tracking in more dirt and allergens. In the spirit of summertime, here are some tips to keep your carpet looking new, even through the increased traffic that happens during the warmer months.

  • Vacuum at least once per week. Once per week keeps your carpet looking new without putting extra stress on carpet fibers. Remember to set your vacuum to the appropriate height (low for short pile carpet, higher for more plush pile) and keep the roller brush free of debris.
  • If you have children or pets, you may need to vacuum more frequently. Remember, the more dirt, debris and fur gets worked in, the harder it is to get out again. Debris in carpet can contribute to faster wear, and can shorten your carpet’s lifespan.
  • If you really want to keep your carpet looking brand new, consider making your home a shoes-free zone. Taking shoes off at the door will not only keep your carpet cleaner, it can lead to a more relaxed atmosphere and make you more comfortable too.
  • Steam cleaning is one option that people find useful to keep their carpets looking clean, especially if children or pets are around. Steam cleaning, when done correctly and with appropriate carpet cleaning solution, can rejuvenate as well as clean. It can lift pile and help the padding under carpet stay elastic. There are many different types of steam cleaners, as well as cleaning solutions, so if you have questions, consult an IICRC certified carpet professional.
